het fukking licht

info
Het Fukking Licht is a project of two multi-instrumentalists. They don’t tell each other what instruments they will use for their next recording date or gig. They release their recordings as limited editions in quantities of prime numbers. Het Fukking Licht is Anglo-Dutch and means The Fucking Light as you might have guessed.

Kutplaneet is the debut album for Het Fukking Licht and it is a wild and raucous affair. In three long pieces these improvisers give us a fistful of their take on noise, drone, shamanistic ritualism and short-circuited electro-acoustics. While the surface of these recordings is weather-beaten and distorted, somewhere deep down there is a glowing core of primal passion. This is music in which the love for sound rules above all else. The album is available as a free digital download and on cd-r in a beautiful digipak (limited to 29 copies!!!).

We will dispense with the not-so-polite appellations here, and tell you Het Fukking Licht (“The Fucking Light”) are as fine an example as any of Narrominded’s trademark humor… Don’t be lulled into taking them too lightly, though – they more than make up for the absurdist titles with some of the most expansive dronescapes this side of cross-over EAI.

Het Fukking Licht enjoy to shroud themselves in enigma and mystery, as the duo not only keeps anonymous, but has also invented some rule to make their encounters more challenging. Most interestingly, they won’t tell each other what instruments they will bring along for their next recording date or gig, but as both seem to be multi-instrumentalists you get to hear percussions, winds, loops, strings, and all kinds of mangled and warped stuff which is impossible to guess its origin. Some might be kitchen pots, for all we can hear.

On here they stay mostly in a more contemplative mood. Sounds evolve with little sparks of feedback over a fundament of bass notes or bathed in a light of chiming ringing tones. The intricate ear and passion for minimalistic changes is the basis of the fascination for this kind of music. With Kutplaneet a lot of things are going on at the same time: these are not mono-thematic drones, but excursions into complex arrangements of noises, sounds and harmonies. Next to the differentiation of the single ingredients, however, there is also the transcending and sometimes mind-melting impact of the whole piece taken together.

Yes, Het Fukking Licht means exactly what you might think of at first when reading it, but it is Dutch (or at least some sort of Dutch, if it is not really Dutch.) What a start for a review of improvised electro-acoustic noise! Het Fukking Licht enjoy to shroud themselves in enigma and mystery, as the duo not only keeps anonymous, but has also invented some rule to make their encounters more interesting and challenging. Most interestingly, they won’t tell each other what instruments they will bring along for their next live gig, but as both seem to be multi-instrumentalists you get to hear percussions, winds, loops, synthie and all kinds of mangled and warped stuff which is impossible to guess its origin. Some might be kitchen pots, for all I can hear. They also release their works in prime-numbers only, which will make an interesting challenge for the free download of “kutplaneet”.

“Kutplaneet” consists of three long pieces: “borstroffelfactor”, “stichting vikingbehoud” and “flutheelal” and I have a few ideas what those might mean, but let’s leave it at that. The duo dives slowly into their sounds, letting them evolve by their own means and flow, never coerce anything against its will. If the sounds stay in a pensive mood, almost ritualistically percussive with longwinded wails on top, then so be it. If they start to fill up with chaotic noise and uncontrollable thunder to a frenzied climax of feedback and noise, then so be it either. Life is too short to try to make things do what they don’t want instead of surfing the flow enjoying what becomes a success and leaving aside what asks to be left aside.

On here they stay mostly in a more contemplative mood. Sounds evolve with little sparks of feedback over a fundament of bass notes or bathed in a light of chiming ringing notes. Like Dirac or Perlonex the intricate ear and passion for minimalistic changes in sounds, mostly at the most microscopic level, is the basis of the fascination for this kind of music. With Het Fukking Licht a lot of things are going on at the same time, these are not mono-thematic drones, but excursions into complex arrangements of noises, sounds and harmonies. But next to the differentiation of the single ingredients, there is also always the transcending and sometimes (hopefully) mindblowing impact of the whole piece taken together. Without getting too deep into synergies and the facts of transcendental mathematics, there is reason enough to suggest that a big portion of the effect if electro-acoustic improvisation is made by the person listening But interestingly the recipient actually has no means of taking any decisions in the evolvement of the music, but has to take whatever comes for what it is. And then make it his own purely in a cognitive way. All of this may also explain why this kind of music is a fringe affair in so many ways, but mostly regarding the audience. But those few it is very rewarding.

You may get this interesting tryptichon of electro-acoustic improvisation and noise for free at www.narrominded.com.

PS: “kutplaneet” is not really download-only, but since the CD-version is limited to 29(!) pieces, which are probably long gone and sold out now, I found it more reasonable to point out the free download only.

Geweldige kutplaat!

Two unnamed musicians are behind Het Fukking Licht and represent the interest of Narrominded into improvised music. The two musicians don’t know what the other will bring to a recording session. Its also not mentioned on the cover of this highly limited (29 copies!) CDR and unlimited download release. To me it sounds a like a whole bunch of acoustic objects, contact microphones and sound effects. The three tracks go as one flow here. The start playing their objects and then slowly start adding various sound effects to the sound material. Sometimes perhaps a bit too much reverb is used, but throughout its alright. I am reminded at times of the old zoviet*france sound, with its (pseudo) ritualist meandering. Things bubble below the surface with some great underpinning tension. This is not the average improvisation music, mainly since its hard to recognize any of the instruments, but more like an interesting cross-over between improvisation, electronics and drone like music. Maybe here and there a bit too long, but throughout an excellent release. Should have been a bigger edition, me thinks.

Muusika, mille juured peituvad kompromissitus vana kooli industrialmuusikas ning eksperimentaalses elektroonikas-krautrock`is a la Conrad Schnitzler või Manuel Göttsching. Mida ette võib heita, on helipildis üleliia domineeriv digitaalsus-digitaalne luitumus. Seda tulnuks (rohkem) peita. Samuti olen täiesti veendunud, et analoogformaadis kõlaks “Kutplaneet” märksa paremini. Seesugune saund lihtsalt vajab loomupärast “määritust”.
