info
Narrominded presents new albums by trusted Narrominded artists: Living Ornaments and Psychon. Both groups have been active on the label for almost a decade and with their new work they show they still have an absolute fresh and a very own vision on music. It was 2004, when the album Apocalypse Has Been Dubbed The Weekend Pill was released, when we last heard from Psychon. Now, five years later, Slow Country For Old Men is completed and it has been worth the wait. Nothing has changed in the eccentric complexity of the music of Psychon and the eclectic mould of all sorts of musical styles is also back. The gents of Psychon see their new record as a result of changing musical taste during the last five years they built, mixed and molded these ten tracks. So be aware of shreds of hip-hop, field recordings, electronic minimalism and acoustic maximalism. There’s even a little bit of reggae to be discovered.

Less is more.

The title’s wordplay with Cormac McCarthy’s bleak novel (and the no less bleak and often misunderstood movie based on the same novel) is a misleading conjecture to Psychon’s music. Also the various close ups of a man’s body – throat on the front cover, backside shoulder on the back, hairy parts on the inside – with all their hyperrealist focus on all the minor malformities usually photoshopped out of any designed fotography, is misleading. Because “slow country for old men” is neither bleak and without morals and leading to destruction nor is it based on bringing the inadequacies and ugliness of electronic miniscules to the surface. Yes, very much like their first album “apocalypse has been dubbed the weekend pill” their music is enigmatic and unpredictable, but it is also refined and well composed.

Over the course of five years, in which “psychon was the last thing on our minds” (from the insert text), the trio of Lars Meijer, Coen Oscar Polack and Jantijn Prins has recorded, re-recorded, spliced, tweaked and re-arranged this collection of ten tracks the way they saw fit and with whathever was on their mind. No matter how strange they go, and there is some weird shit on here for sure, they seem always to return to beat-oriented, well-versed electronic coffee house funk and a warm kind of organic electronica based on metric structures. In between though there are field recordings, vocal samples, a saxophone exploring the outer skirts of its reaches as well as hip hop beats, scraped guitar strings or minimal noise.

The whatever comes to their minds approach never gets the upper hand, though, because balance and arrangement is still a main focus. Even when an acoustic guitar line follows right after a heavily spliced and looped vocal sample or a heavy funk basis is constrasted with some heavy breathing experiments and a strange sample saying “Dutch” over the crash cymbal only to incorporate an old eighties sax-line and sample in some way you only realize after several listenings that this thing here actually refers to something you heard a thousand times when you were a teenager. And then you still can’t remember what it is. There is nothing you could really compare Psychon to.

Who could ever get to the bottom of what all of this really means? Someday music archaeologists probably will look back and pronounce this the most important experimental album of the decade. Well, maybe it will be just some music blog that puts up illegal mp3 downloads and has 50 devoted readers worldwide. Either way, I am sure that “slow country for old men” will leave some impact on this world. Oh yeah, and if anything, the title refers to how the trio feels in their homebase and nothing else. And in this respect this may be a soothing thought.

Regardless what anyone may think, Psychon has not been asleep for the past five years. After releasing “apocalypse has been dubbed the weekend pill”, the band submerged into a sea of sounds redescovering new textures, shapes and forms of music. Eventually that led them to a path where different musical tastes were found.

It is good to notice how the words “new” and “discover” can easily merge into what we usually call “evolution”. So basically this means Lars Meijer, Coen Polack and Jantijn Prins bring us this new release as the result of the progressive change on their musical tastes. The complexity and density of their tracks remain intact, but the several layers of sound are now refined.

“Field recordings, electronic minimalism and acoustic maximalism” were blent with such various styles, redefining the band’s bounderies in a studio. They reconstructed their own patterns of what music production might be, allowing the existence of new sonorities, where there is no space for inconsistency. Everything plays a specific role in the track as a whole, letting harmony breath there. The long tracks counteract the short ones and give the record a certain dynamic.

Ultimately, fluidity is the key-word.

Its good to know that people do work hard and long to create their music (though it should not be confused with ‘I worked on this very long, so it is very good’), and Psychon from Haarlem or Amsterdam took five years to create a follow-up to ‘Apocalypse Has Been Dubbed The Weekend Pill’. That album was crazy mixture of musical genres, like symphonic rock, techno, IDM, ambient, dashes of krautrock but also jazz and noise and perhaps the bad news is that ‘Slow Country For Old Man’ isn’t something else, but more of the same. But waiting five years for something you liked back then, might not be bad either? Again we are bombarded with samples from all over the musical spectrum, but throughout hip hop like rhythms play an important role – if any change that might be the one major change in this new Psychon work – and lots of wacky vocal samples, guitars, ambient doodling, psychedelica and strangely enough sounds all pretty coherent. Its like this stuff is made to stick to eachother. This could be big on the dance/rock live circuit, as its not far away from say C’Mon & Kypsky. The humour extends to the titles: ‘Bollywoodhowl’, ‘Campdavidhasselhoff’ or ‘Nanamissouri’.
Also Living Ornaments took some time to follow up their ‘Vlokken’ release (see Vital Weekly 518), three years. I think that membership for both Pscyhon and Living Ornaments are quite a like, but there is a big difference in sound approach. Whereas Psychon bounces in all direction, Living Ornaments are more in one corner: IDM based sample music. They released on Skam and Scarcelight in the past to give you a clue. Rhythm plays an important role in their music, either straight forward from the rhythm machine, or through sampled sounds. It seems that these pieces are more like finished, rounded off songs than the same more free play of before. It makes the music more coherent than before too, I think. Maybe some of the pieces are still a bit long for my taste. Oddly enough I don’t see Living Ornaments on the big stage, which is funny: shouldn’t they be getting the kids to dance and not Psychon? Perhaps so, but Living Ornaments are more armchair dance music – tap your feet music. Nice too for the after party.
