boutros bubba

info
Narrominded presents National Anthems, the first full album by the Dutch rock band Boutros Bubba. Boutros Bubba is a rock band, consisting of musicians that have formerly played in Gone Bald, Petrified Host, Quarles van Ufford, SGP and Crowd Surfers Must Die. Boutros Bubba’s music is like a road with a sturdy asphalt surface, but with treacherously slippery patches. At points in their music the fundament of heavy drumming and tight guitar riffs gives way to swaggering drinking music and suspenseful improvisations. Not only in the lyrics, but also in the music itself, there is a deep sense of absurdism. National Anthems is the first full album of Boutros Bubba, after the cd EP Hearing Voicst In A Beer Commercial Makes Me Wanna Get Drunk and the 7″ How I Wrote The Star Spangled Banner. The cd National Anthems was recorded in Sing-Sing studios in the North of the Netherlands and was later sublimely mastered by Jason Ward at Chicago Mastering Service. During forty minutes a parade of country musicians-turned-religious maniacs and dominant clowns, of puzzled barfighters and inexorable drunks, of melancholic weathermen and cryptosexist office workers passes by in the form of nine tightly played rocksongs.
National Anthems is released in co-operation with My Own Music Industry Recordings and Whosbrain Records.

The first full length of Dutch rock band Boutros Bubba keeps all the promises their single “How I wrote the Star Spangled Banner” and their first CD-EP “hearing voicst in a beer commercial makes me wanna get drunk” made. The dense rock, the blues and country influences, but most of all the relentless heaviness and weirdness makes “national anthems” a great alternative rock record in the vein of all those albums when alternative rock was still something good and did not mean washed down, produced for music television pseudo bands. No, here you can hear and feel three people in the basic power group set up making great guitar based underground rock music. Guitars and vocals by the way are provided by Spoelstra, who recently also released an interesting EP called “I got issues the shape of Italy” on narrominded, where he lays out the tracks that come here as basic and structured in an even more freakazoid fashion. Next to all the street credibility, the honesty and the authenticity of the music (and the people behind it), there is only one thing you should remember about Boutros Bubba: don’t believe a word they tell you.

Who would have thought the Dutch could be such a cynical bunch? National Anthems is the skewed, angular, sarcastic outpouring of three gifted and apparently rather nihilistic patrons of that land where, some say, anything goes. Immediately grabbing you by the shoulders and ensuring it has your undivided attention, the album opens with the brilliant Chew. Staccato instrumentation ploughs through the opening refrain before giving way to a winding verse of sneering atonality. Such urgency is offset by the Pavement-infused Flip Coins which nonchalantly swaggers and swings its way through some catchy alt-pop. A Black And White Christmas is Jesus Lizard to the nth degree as drawled words slowly tie themselves round shifting keys. Likewise Actor/Director goes every direction except the one you might expect, but the effect is thrilling, sounding like a collision between our own Super Adventure Club and US Maple.

Dutch music label Narrominded releases records and mp3’s since 2000. Their releases cover electronics, electro-acoustic music, improvisation, indie and noiserock. With the releases by Boutras Bubba and Spoelstra we are in the noiserock and indie section. Boutros Bubba is a band consisting of musicians that have formerly played in Gone Bald, Petrified Host, Quarles van Ufford, SGP and Crowd Surfers Must Die, with Spoelstra as one of them. A tight trio of bass, guitar and drums plus vocals. They do their job very disciplined. They play a rough and straight kind of rockmusic with some interesting twists every now and then. Like the cleverly constructed “Intelligent Designer Pussy” that starts with a Naked City-like outburst of energy. It is in contrast with tracks like ‘Actor/Director’ that show rock from their dullest side. Anyway, from this music that incorporates influences from hardrock and hardcore, you should not expect too much new musical adventures. It is the performance that counts and make this music ‘new’, albeit in another sense. From that point of view Boutros Bubba’s is very up to date, enjoyable and very alive. Their ‘National Anthems’ is released in cooperation with Whosbrain Records and MOMI Recordings. In a extremely limited edition of 50 pieces Narrominded released the solorecord ‘I got Issues The Shape of Italy’ by Spoelstra. It contains 6 tracks that have Spoelstra playing guitars, drums, sampler and effects. The first piece ‘I Breathe Country’ starts with a waltz, making you think that we are dealing here with country music. But quickly enough the music completely deranges. ‘How to run an Empire’ is not only the funniest title on this record, it is also the most satisfying piece. It is a convincingly constructed piece with unusual rhythmical twists and breaks. Like on the record by Boutros Bubba, Spoelstra sells rock built from comparable ideas. In the closing track ‘The South East Disneyland Separist Party’ – a Chadbourne-like title – Spoeltra effectively de-escalates his country trip with his slowing down manoeuvres. I guess I’m too old for the rock that is contained on these two releases. The freshness of the recordings do not win from my dominating feeling that says I have heard it all so many times before. So these are for the young ones.

It’s been a couple years since I’ve last checked in on Dutch noise-rockers Boutros Bubba. Last time I heard from them was with their ’06 EP Hearing Voicst In a Beer Commercial Makes Me Wanna Get Drunk. However, the band is back with their debut album and between the two year span since I last heard them they went and became a trio and released a 7 inch apparently. The single I unfortunately have not heard but if it’s anything like their recently released debut full-length album National Anthems, then I probably need to try and get a hold of that. National Anthems was co-released earlier this year through the Narrorminded/MOMI/Whosbrain labels and like their previous EP proves to be another successful venture into disharmonic noise/indie-rock.

Immediately I found myself enjoying the fuller sound as a trio. I liked them while they were a duo; however the extra kick these songs get with the addition of bass is really a difference maker. Some of National Anthems remind me of SWITCHiTTER and underrated greats White Tornado since I think a lot of Boutros Bubba’s sound makes its home in that same frenzied math oriented area of noise-rock. Check it out for yourself.

If you’re interested in picking up National Anthems then head on over to the Narrominded site to do that. Good stuff.
