katadreuffe

OK, let’s get this over with. Here’s the deal.

Katadreuffe was formed in Amsterdam in 2005. The band was named after the main character of a novel by Ferdinand Bordewijk called Character (1938). Not necessarily because the band members liked or loved the book all that much (only one or two have actually read it, none of them own a copy), but simply because it has a nice ring to it (in Dutch, at least). Besides, practically every other band-name is already taken, so what else are you going to call your band, right? Right. Deal with it.

Just so you know, there are four members in Katadreuffe. Ruben Braeken (1984) plays guitar; Maarten Broekhuizen (1982) plays guitar and sings (sort of); Bas Jongboer (1978) plays bass and synthesizer; and, Timothy Plevier (1982) plays drums. Previously Michiel van Overmeire (1982) played bass, but he decided to leave the band in May 2009.

Anyway, after a couple of years of writing songs and mapping out musical idiosyncrasies, the band made their live debut in September 2007. The shows that followed took place at venues such as OCCII, OT301, dB’s Studio, Zaal 100, Studio/K, Winston Kingdom, etc. and festivals such as Incubate and Ontzettend Leiden, where they shared stages with bands such as Parts & Labor, Cinemechanica, the Locust, the Creeping Nobodies, Neptune, GI Joe, Boutros Bubba, etc.

In the summer of 2008, Katadreuffe spent three days at Corno Zwetsloot’s Next to Jaap studio in Voorhout recording and mixing their first EP entitled Quel Gargantua!. This session resulted in four songs, which were then mastered by James Plotkin in Hoboken, New Jersey. The EP was released by Narrominded in May 2009, both as a limited physical CD, featuring handmade artwork for all 200 copies, and free MP3 and FLAC downloads.

In June 2009 the band recorded another set of songs under the technical guidance of future bandmate Bas Jongboer in a former cooling storage at the Russenberg horticultural facilities in Valkenburg. One of these songs was featured on one of VPRO 3voor12’s Hollands Nieuwe compilations and was subsequently made available as another free download via Narrominded in August 2010.

Recording sessions for a second EP, to be released late 2010 or early 2011, are currently underway.

Musically, Katadreuffe incorporates elements from post-hardcore, noise, shoegaze, post-punk and pop. An almost constant rhythmic tension and a contrast between high frequency (in terms of pitch-shifting and density) and “delayed” atmospheric guitar parts are some of the music’s most prominent features. Textually, well, someone’s a nitpicking neurotic ne’er-see-well, that’s for sure.

Dealt with.
